A table, three hours, and no way out into English
Getting There
Miraflores is the coastal district of Lima and it is where most visitors stay, which is both the convenience and the problem. The parts of it around Parque Kennedy and the clifftop are full of English speakers and menus in English. From Lima airport to Miraflores is about an hour in traffic, longer in the evening. Use an app rather than the taxi touts at arrivals. Within the district you walk. Between districts, use an app or the Metropolitano bus. The important route is not geographic, it is social. Get four or five streets back from the tourist strip. Small bars, no menu in English, football on a screen in the corner. That is a ten minute walk and it is the entire difference between practising and being practised on. Barranco, the next district south along the coast, does the same thing with better bars and slightly more of a scene.
The Month
Lima has two moods. From roughly May to November the coast sits under a low grey ceiling that locals call la garua, a permanent damp overcast that never quite becomes rain. It is not cold, it is just grey for six months. December to April is the Lima summer. Sun, warm evenings, people outside, terraces full. For a brief that is entirely about ending up in conversations, that matters more than it would anywhere else. None of this stops the method. The bars are indoors and they are full in July as well. The grey months are actually decent for this, because everyone is inside and nobody is leaving early. Weeknights are better than weekends for talking. On a Friday the music is too loud and the room is too full. On a Tuesday the bar has eight people in it and one of them will talk to you.
The Receipt
One night in a neighbourhood bar in Miraflores. I did not keep the tab and I am not going to reconstruct it line by line. It was a handful of beers and a shared plate across three hours, paid in cash in soles, and it cost less than one hour with a tutor.
What Went Wrong
I had three years of college Spanish and I froze ordering a coffee in Trujillo. Not because I did not know the words. Because I was composing the sentence, checking it, and by the time it was ready the woman had asked me twice and switched to pointing. For weeks I drank in the wrong bars. Places with English menus, on streets with hostels, where the staff switch to English the moment they hear your accent and the other customers are all doing the same trip you are. I thought I was practising. I was being served. The night that changed it was not planned. A small place in Miraflores, four or five streets back, nobody spoke any English, and there was no way out of the conversation. Three hours. I was bad at it for the first forty minutes and fine by the end, and I have never got that in a classroom. The mistake I kept making for months before that: switching to English the moment I was stuck. It ends the lesson instantly and it is the only real failure available here. The fix is one sentence, ready in advance. No entendi, repitelo mas despacio. Say that and the conversation continues. Say sorry, do you speak English, and it is over. Apps got me the first five hundred words and they were worth it. They did not get me past the wall. The wall comes down in rooms where you cannot escape into English, and you have to walk into those rooms on purpose because nothing will push you into one.
